I got an early start in sports medicine working with my father. He is a veterinarian for racehorses, and I always say I followed in my dad's footsteps - just in a different species! I was drawn to orthopaedic surgery by the importance I place on enjoying a functional, productive life. Living without pain and being able to pursue the things that bring you joy is much of the essence of life. Thus, my first question for my patients is what they do for work and for fun. My goal is to help you regain productivity and joy in your life. In addition, I have a great interest in personalized care and aligning care decisions with the goals and preferences of each individual patient. In addition, I made a deliberate decision to focus solely on hip preservation surgery to gain a deep understanding of the hip and its function and the skills to deliver the best possible outcomes to my patients.
I am an assistant professor and the vice chairman of practice transformation in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University School of Medicine. I also have faculty appointments in the Department of Population Health Sciences, Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. I direct the orthopaedic practice transformation unit (PTU) that seeks to transform how we care for patients organizationally, financially, and technologically to improve the value of health care and its experience. Through a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, administrators, and researchers, the PTU is able to characterize, implement, and iterate solutions through new care models, payment models, and technology. I am also a decision scientist, performing research in patient preferences and shared decision making with the goal of personalizing care and helping my patients make the best decisions for themselves. Lastly, I perform research on biomarkers, dynamic imaging of the hip and hip arthroscopy outcomes.
