I am truly honored to provide care for patients with breast cancer and high-risk breast disease. I recognize that I enter patients’ lives at one of their most vulnerable moments. It is my goal to make sure that all patients feel cared for and confident that I will work hard for them and use the most advanced surgical techniques to treat their disease. Also, I like to focus on the aesthetic outcome of breast surgery while treating disease. I am proud to be part of Duke Health where I know patients receive high-quality cancer care, as well as access to the resources and support that help patients during their treatment.
My primary research focuses on the epigenetics of breast cancer. Epigenetics means “outside the gene” and reflects changes that occur during one’s lifetime that can impact the development and progression of breast cancer. I think of epigenetic modifications as light switches: they turn lights on and off. Genetic mutations are like light bulbs: if broken, lights will not turn on. Epigenetic changes are reversible, and therefore can be potential targets for therapy. It’s an exciting field.
