About Me

Neurologic conditions can be scary, and neuroimmunologic conditions even more so. It's easy to feel in the dark about what is happening. I approach patient care with just as much attention to empowering education as I do to disease management. I strive to "turn the lights on" so people know more about their conditions, what to expect, and (most importantly) what we can do about them. If we ever meet, don't be surprised if I quote John Steinbeck or offer advice on your next mobile device.

Clinical Focus and Research

My Research Interests

As a neuroimmunologist, I specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of immune system disorders that affect the central nervous system. Chief among the conditions I help manage is multiple sclerosis, but I also see patients with neuromyelitis optica, neurosarcoidosis, transverse myelitis, and auto-immune encephalitis. My research interests are in quality improvement in MS management, in understanding and treating MS fatigue, and in utilizing new mobile technologies to monitor patients with neurologic conditions.

Insurance

Duke Health contracts with most major health insurance carriers and transplant networks, including the ones listed below. Before scheduling your appointment, we strongly recommend you contact your insurance company to verify that the Duke Health location or provider you plan to visit is included in your network. Your insurance company will also be able to inform you of any co-payments, co–insurances, or deductibles that will be your responsibility. If you proceed in scheduling an appointment and your health insurance benefits do not participate with Duke, your out of pocket liability may be higher. We will contact you regarding your coverage and patient liability. If you are uninsured, learn more about our financial assistance policy.
