About Me

I am an orthopaedic spine surgeon who provides surgical management of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. Among the conditions I see are cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy, disc herniations, lumbar spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis and spinal deformity, spinal tumors and trauma. I perform open procedures, and when appropriate, minimally invasive and motion-sparing procedures. My primary focus is reestablishing function and relieving pain related to the human spine. I aim to work with each patient individually to best understand his or her symptoms and to provide a personalized and effective treatment plan with the patient's goals in mind. As a former educator, I take great pride in educating my patients about the spine and their diagnoses in order to best involve them in the decision making process and provide them with the best outcomes possible.

Clinical Focus and Research

My Research Interests

I have been actively involved in medical research since beginning medical school in 2006. Since that time I have been involved in many research projects including assessing medical transport of spinal trauma patients, evaluating spinal alignment of adolescent patients with scoliosis, and most recently, looking at the radiation exposure of imaging systems used in the operating room during spinal surgery. Modern technology has provided us with new ways to image patients during surgery which can be very helpful and improve our accuracy, but we must ensure we are utilizing any new technology as safely as possible. Working at such an amazing institution as Duke Health allows me to continue to pursue my academic interests while providing outstanding clinical care to my patients.
