Duke Health contracts with most major health insurance carriers and transplant networks, including the ones listed below. Before scheduling your appointment, we strongly recommend you contact your insurance company to verify that the Duke Health location or provider you plan to visit is included in your network. Your insurance company will also be able to inform you of any co-payments, co–insurances, or deductibles that will be your responsibility. If you proceed in scheduling an appointment and your health insurance benefits do not participate with Duke, your out of pocket liability may be higher. We will contact you regarding your coverage and patient liability. If you are uninsured, learn more about our financial assistance policy.
Ann Marie Navar, MD, PhD
As a cardiologist, my focus is on cardiovascular disease prevention. I take care of general heart disease, so everything from coronary artery disease, people who have had prior heart attacks, heart bypass surgery, or need heart stents. I also see patients with heart rhythm issues like atrial fibrillation, heart valve problems, or heart failure. Generally, after a person is hospitalized for a cardiovascular disease condition, they will come see me in follow-up clinic to learn what strategies we can take to keep them out of the hospital. I focus on how to prevent the complications of those conditions, like stroke or repeat heart attacks, and use a lot of the evidence behind all of the therapies we use, combined with the priorities of the patient. Cardiovascular care at Duke is unique because every doctor here is an expert in this field. We aren’t just offering treatments but are the experts behind the treatments and guidelines that other healthcare providers offer around the world.
Clinical Focus and Research
My research focuses on how to prevent heart attacks and strokes through targeted treatment of high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I am particularly interested in how to best treat risk factors in young adults and adults in mid-life to prevent the development of cardiovascular disease. As part of this work, I am developing strategies to improve how physicians can communicate risks of heart disease and benefits of treatments to patients.
